La police pakistanaise a annoncé vendredi avoir démantelé un réseau de trafiquants d'organes humains, en retrouvant la trace d'un garçon de 14 ans disparu depuis plusieurs semaines et laissé pour mort après avoir eu l'un de ses reins prélevés.
Les trafiquants attiraient leurs jeunes et vulnérables victimes en leur promettant des emplois lucratifs, avant de leur retirer certains organes - essentiellement des reins -, qu'ils vendaient pour un prix pouvant atteindre jusqu'à 900.000 roupies (3.600 euros).
Opérations clandestines
«Ce n'est qu'après que nous avons remonté sa piste que nous avons découvert qu'une opération de trafic d'organes était derrière la disparition du garçon», a indiqué à l'AFP Rehan Anjum, un porte-parole de la police de la province du Pendjab (centre-est).
«Le garçon nous a dit que quand il s'est réveillé, il y avait un homme arabe sur un brancard à côté de lui, donc nous pensons que la plupart des clients sont étrangers», a-t-il ajouté, en précisant que six personnes avaient été arrêtées.
Les victimes étaient emmenées vers un laboratoire clandestin de transplantation d'organes à Rawalpindi, près de la capitale Islamabad. Ce type d'officines clandestines ne disposent généralement pas au Pakistan de l'équipement médical ni du savoir-faire nécessaires à une transplantation, et des patients y sont déjà par le passé morts de complications.
«Je suis juste reconnaissant que la police l'ait retrouvé à temps», a déclaré à l'AFP le père du garçon, à Lahore, capitale du Pendjab, où il avait disparu. La police a précisé ne pas avoir encore retrouvé les médecins impliqués dans l'opération. Le Pakistan a interdit en 2010 le trafic d'organes humains, puni d'une peine de prison maximale de 10 ans.
