Le 22 janvier 2023, le patrouilleur de haute mer de la Marine nationale, «Kédougou», interceptait, à 335 kilomètres au large de Dakar, le navire «Mamsini Sonko Faye » qui transportait 805 kilogrammes de cocaïne. Les sept membres de l'équipage du bateau qui battait pavillon gambien, étaient arrêtés en même temps.
Le groupe était dirigé par un italien, Ciro D'aana. Il était assisté par quatre gambiens dont David Salifu, Mohamed Tounkara, Babucar Sylla et Ousmane Simaha ainsi que deux ghanéens Aly Mohamed Awa, et Abrahman Thomson. Ciro D'aana avait admis, comme les autres, travailler avec le ressortissant gambien Assane Souleymane Faty. Mais les enquêteurs ont pu faire d'autres découvertes.

Des sources autorisées renseignent que le chargement en question appartenait à la Ndrangheta, cette organisation criminelle basée à Calabre, au Sud de l'italie.
